2023 NorthEast Amateur June 21-24

I made my way up to Rhode Island which is a small state in the NorthEast of America for the NorthEast Amateur, an invite only event hosted at Wannamoisett Country Club. Everything went a little smoother this event with my clubs arriving when I did so I was able to get full prep for the event getting in 27 holes before the start of the tournament. I am trying to manage my workload for this trip so I won’t play 2 rounds of 18 holes in the 2 days prior to make sure I don’t burn myself out.

Wannamoisett is a small par 69 course who’s defense is long rough firm greens and tucked pin positions. It’s amazing how different a course can play when the conditions get like that. The 1st round was solid. I hit the ball nicely and managed to get in at 1-under par 68 on the par 69.

The 2nd round was more of the same, I hit the ball really nicely but unforunately lost 6 shots to the PGA Tour average on and around the greens, a theme that is being all too common for my liking. I settled for a round of +3 with a couple of good late birdies.

The 3rd round kicked my butt. I didn’t drive the ball well and it was a real challenge to try and play from the rough considering the firmness of the greens. You just had to be in the fairway if you wanted to get the ball close. My score really got away from me and I ended up making 10 bogeys to sign for a 7-over par 76.

Rounds of 68, 72 and 76 gave me a 9-over par total which resulted in a missed cut by 2 shots.

I know that the scoring will come around and that my game is feeling very close to where it needs to be. I can compete with these guys and I’m looking forward to getting the chance to do it again.

One bonus that came out of the week is they had a long drive competition after the 3rd round which I managed to take out with 371 yards. Hitting a PB measured ball speed number of 195mph.
